Grade 6 Core French

Specific Curriculum Outcomes

Students will use French to establish and maintain relationships, to share ideas and opinions, and to get things done.

  • Ask and respond to questions
  • Develop, with support, simple oral and written texts
  • Participate in classroom routines in French
  • Express, with support, emotions and opinions
  • Describe, with support, people, places, animals, objects and events
  • Identify the main idea and several supporting details of simple texts
  • Extract specific information from a variety of texts
  • Read texts independently (i.e. short illustrated readers, labels)
  • Participate in forms of creative expression such as games, role play, music, art and poems

Students will demonstrate a knowledge of francophone cultures in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada and other countries and an understanding of the links between language, culture and identity.

  • Recite or sing Canada‚Äôs national anthem in French
  • Identify similarities and differences between their lives and those of francophone children
  • Recognize that Canada is a multicultural country
  • Identify the benefits of speaking more than one language
  • Identify major francophone areas in Canada

Students will use language learning strategies to access information, clarify and negotiate meaning and cope effectively in unfamiliar situations in English as well as in French.

  • Use clues, including visual and verbal cues, key words, cognates and word families to help with communication
  • Take risks and accept errors as part of the learning process
  • Use appropriate supports, including textual clues, to accomplish a task (ie websites, graphs, key words)
  • Identify the sounds of the French language (sound symbol correlation)
  • Engage in self-evaluation 6.6 follow oral and written instructions, using a model
  • Organize to accomplish a task
